How a “bad” singer can become a great singer?

How a “bad” singer can become a great singer?

Start with songs in your comfort zone

When you speak, you have your own natural tone voice. It will be in your best interest to sing songs or find singers who matches your vocal range. If you have a lower tone voice, try not to start with female songs or songs of an unachievable range.

Pitch

You may have trouble matching pitch, or you are so far off from the song that you are trying to match. But remember, as human, it is very rare to be completely tone deaf. When you think you are tone deaf, chances are that you lack the muscle memory and control to link your ear to your throat. In other words, you perceive the correct pitch but your vocal cord just does not allow you to go there.

The best way to correct your pitch and tone is to start really small. Sometimes, it is easier to hum a song then to actually sing it. Compared with singing a song with a full grown voice, it is a lot easier to control your voice when you are using a small part of your vocal cord.

Imagine you are singing a lullaby, starts practising your preferred song with a hum sound, e.g. “mm”, “nye”, “hwa”, and you might just find it easier to adjust the tone.

Stretch your face

Singing does not occur in the throat. It has much to do with how the voice resonate on the face. If you are having a pitch or tone problem, or if your voice does not project, chances are you are having a tense face.

It is important to get a feeling of openness for the face. Stretch out your face and imagine that it is totally open. Stretch out the back of your throat and drop your jaw as if you are yawning. The space created is optimal for singing.

Embrace your flaws while practising

Good singers make it sound totally effortless. But in reality, there are a lot of trial and error when it comes to finding your best voice. While practising and increasing your range, you might start to sound totally unlike before. You might even start to wobble or crack your voice.

Some budding singers are really held back by the changes in their voice. As a singer, it is important get used to the occasional cracks and wobbles in your voice when you are practising. Keep practising and eventually you will eventually see the progress.
