The answer is simple: rest! Having abundant rest is of utmost importance since it helps to reduce the stress on vocal cords. Try to sleep at least 8 hours a night to ensure that your vocal cords have a good rest.
Note: Bear in mind that you should breathe through your nose rather than your mouth when you sleep.
