From Beijing to the Global Stage: Dr. Steve Tam Guides Students Toward Their Musical Dreams
For young singers, competitions are about more than trophies. They're a chance to gain real stage experience, train under pressure, and connect with performers from around the world.
Dr. Steve Tam recently accompanied a group of students, including singers from Indonesia and Canada, to an international competition in Beijing. The trip delivered far more than a contest: studio recording time, industry connections, and a new songwriting opportunity.
Strong Results in Beijing
Dr. Steve's students turned in standout performances against competitors from multiple countries and regions:
One student called Nicole placed in the Top 15, finishing 4th overall
Another student called Evan won 1st place in his category and finished as overall runner-up
Global competitions set a much higher bar than smaller, local contests, and these results reflect real vocal and stage ability.
Training On the Road
One advantage of having a teacher travel with students: training doesn't stop at the competition venue. Dr. Steve worked with students daily throughout the trip, refining song interpretation, vocal technique, stage presence, and mental preparation in real time.
From the Stage to the Studio
The trip also led to a new songwriting opportunity. While in Beijing, Dr. Steve was invited by a company to write an original song for the students, built around a message of encouraging young people to study hard, chase their goals, and inspire others. It's a natural extension of his approach to teaching: music as encouragement, not just performance.
