Not a Miracle, But Passion: Steve Tam's 5-Day Challenge to Compose for the Peace Lion Club
This past March 12th marked a significant evening for the Hong Kong Peace Lion Club: their annual gala dinner. For me, musician Steve Tam, that night was the culmination of a five-day creative sprint that birthed their new theme song, "同心傳亮光" (Passing the Light Together).
The "Impossible" Task
Just five days before the event, I received an invitation: to compose an original theme song for the Peace Lion Club, to be premiered at their gala. The song needed to encapsulate their spirit of "Peaceful Coexistence, Service First" – a piece that could touch hearts and unify members. Due to the tight timeline, I would need to single-handedly handle the lyrics, composition, arrangement, and even the final duet recording.
Five days. It sounded like an impossible mission. But I didn't hesitate. I believe that the power of music reveals itself most when it's needed.
The Story Behind "Passing the Light Together"
The creative process was a race against time, but also a deep internal dialogue. I thought about the Lions Club members, who selflessly serve their communities day in and day out. Their light is warm and steady. I wanted this song to amplify and pass on that light.
The title, "Passing the Light Together," was born from that reflection. The lyrics, "Together we pass the light, with love illuminating the path ahead," are dedicated not only to the Peace Lion Club but to everyone who gives a piece of themselves for others.
