Music Education Is a Long-Term Investment, Not a Ticket to a Top School
Why are you paying for your child‘s music lessons?
For the certificate? For a spot at a top school? Or for something that will stay with them for life?
In Hong Kong, parents often invest over HK$200,000 and ten years into music education (based on HK$500 per lesson to Grade 8). If that investment only buys a certificate — and the child never touches the instrument again — the return is zero.
What‘s the Real Return?
Research shows that students who receive long-term music training tend to be more focused, attentive, and disciplined. These qualities can’t be measured by a certificate, but they stay with a child for life.
More importantly, the value of music education lies in developing a lifelong love for music. If a child quits after Grade 8 and never sings or plays again, the effort was wasted.
The Most Common Mistake
Treating “passing the exam” as the goal. An exam is a milestone, not the destination. If a child only follows instructions like “louder, faster” without enjoying the process, they learn technique, not music.
