Wrong Track = 3 Months Wasted? The Truth About HK Schools Music Festival Song Choice
Your child is preparing for the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. What song will they sing?
The truth: Vocal Solo is divided into two completely separate tracks — Chinese and Foreign Language. Pick the wrong one, and months of practice go to waste.
Two Independent Tracks
According to the 78th Festival syllabus:
Chinese Vocal Solo (Classes 12-21) — All set pieces are Chinese songs. Class 12 requires 《相見時難別亦難》, Class 14 requires 《回鄉曲》, and Class 20 requires 《同一首歌》 with specific requirements: F major, sung in Mandarin, repeat with a different verse.
Foreign Language Vocal Solo (Classes 1-11) — Set pieces are English or other foreign language songs. The Ms Barbara Fei Vocal Solo Prize Finals featured Pie Jesu (John Rutter), Youth and Love (R. Vaughan Williams), and Neue Liebe (Hugo Wolf).
The two tracks are completely independent. Competitors may enter one class from each language section, but not more than one under either section.
How to Choose
1. Language strength. Clear Mandarin/Cantonese diction → Chinese track. Natural English pronunciation → Foreign Language track.
2. Vocal characteristics. Chinese art songs emphasize tone, diction, and emotional nuance. Foreign art songs emphasize purity of tone, pitch accuracy, and classical technique.
3. Child's interest. If they love singing in English, the Foreign Language track will keep them motivated.
